Reader’s Q&A

Q: Can I leave protein deep conditioner on my hair overnight?
A: It depends on your deep conditioning preferences. Some ladies prefer deep conditioning overnight while others opt for an hour. Research indicates that within 30minutes, your hair cuticles will be raised to absorb the amount of protein adequate for your hair needs. 30 minutes – an hour is adequate enough for your hair. If you want better penetration, try and lay your hands on this heat cap which takes your deep conditioning sessions to another level.

IMG_2517
Always remember to follow up with a moisturizing deep conditioner afterwards. For instance, you can prepoo with a protein deep conditioner for an hour; shampoo your hair in sections then proceed to use a moisturizing deep conditioner.

Q: Does rinsing a scalp affected by Alopecia with Lipton promote hair growth?
A: If you’ve got Alopecia, tea rinsing is not the way to go. What you’ll require is a bottle of JBCO, Rosemary essential oil, Lavender essential oil & Peppermint essential oil. You’ll need to mix these 4 ingredients together in measured doses. Store this oil mix for a week before commencing usage.

Have a splendid week ahead!!!

Product Review – Natrol Biotin Chewable

IMG_2517

IMG_2518

I was introduced to this brand of Biotin Chewable during my hair assessment with Stevie. She advised me to get it as it’ll aid my new hair regimen. I was a bit skeptical cos I’ve always been lazy when it comes to popping pills but she’d assured me this will be different since I’ll only be required to take one pill daily. Furthermore, it was available in a sweet strawberry flavor and easily dissolves without drinking water.

She told me to get the 5,000mcg and 10,000mcg jars. She’d advised I start off with the 5,000mcg and if I love the results, then I should switch to the 10,000mcg jar provided I’d exhausted the first jar. Off to the store she recommended and I got both jars.

IMG_2543
I commenced usage by mid-November with the jar of 5,000mcg and dutifully popped one pill at night before going to bed. True to her words, it was like popping Vitamin C and it made it easier. When I shared my concern about possible breakouts and stuffs, Stevie had laughed away and stated there won’t be such episodes.
My Observations:
* Easy to swallow as it dissolves easily.
* I was going to the toilet 2ce daily for No. 2 which I never missed since I commenced usage.
* By November ending, I observed my clothes were loose and I needed to take in my jeans.
* My nails grew like crazy.
* My skin has remained clear and there have been no breakout incidents.
* For the very first time, my eyelashes were popping as I noticed more growth in that area.
I compared notes with my younger sister who commenced usage at the same time and noticed that she’d lost 10kg within 2weeks of usage. During my monthly Skype chats with Stevie, I had casually mentioned that I was losing weight and she affirmed that this brand of biotin actually processes your food intake which increases your metabolism leading to weight loss. She further asked if I’ve been going to the toilet frequently and my answer was a big fat ‘YES’.
You might be wondering what happened to my hair with all these wonderful results. Yes, I got growth and it’s the kind of growth I usually get within a 6month stretch cos I got an inch each month as can be seen from the picture below:

IMG_2541 I also went online to check if there were ladies who had recorded growth and this was what I saw:

These are some of the pictures I saw online and it cuts across racial divides but the reviews are largely positive. So I’m onto a good thing and will be ending my 16week stretch by next week.
I’ve been quite diligent with my new regimen and the results are paying off.

Wash Day Chronicle

Apart from Lauren Mechelle whose hair I absolutely adore, I’ve got a hair crush on Kimberly Holden as well. She makes these fun quirky and engaging videos. If you’re thinking of trying on clip in extensions for the holidays, you should also know how to wash them as well. If you’re in the mood for a messy bun tutorial, check the videos below:

Reader’s Q&A

Q: Jamaican Black Castor Oil matts my hair. How do I prevent this going forward.
A: Let me start by saying that Jbco is quite thick. I’d assume you’re using it to seal your ends. Unless you’ve got thick hair strands, it might be okay to use. The key to prevent matting when using this oil is to use it sparingly (pea sized amounts as a little goes a long way). One other option is to use it as a growth aid for your scalp only while you can seal with coconut oil; grapeseed oil, avocado oil or any other natural oil.
Using Jbco to seal for ladies with fine hair, results in matting and it weighs your down giving your ends that stringy , weak look.

Q: How do I prevent breakage during harmattan?
A: There are two options you can consider:
– Protective styling such as braids, wigs and weaves. It’s important you do not leave these styles beyond 4weeks max. If you’re going the wig route, make sure you’ve got corn rows installed underneath. You can wash and deep condition your hair on a weekly basis (assuming you’re opting for wigs). Maintaining your hair during this period is key.
– Second option for ladies who’d like to carry their own hair for the festivities is to incorporate weekly hot oil treatment as your prepoo (keeps your hair lubricated and in top shape, preventing dryness which often leads to breakage. Also make use of heat during deep conditioning sessions on a weekly basis. This you can do with a heat cap or steamer as it ramps up moisture for your hair strands.
These are some of the things I do once Harmattan arrives.

Have a great week ahead!!!

Update: NAHCO finally called off its recent strike. For Ladies who wanted to place an order for the following products, you can now do so.

Recent Wash Day

Wash days recently have become shorter. I’ve had to do away with methods like:
* Deep conditioning overnight
* Prepoo overnight
Less is simply more and I’m enjoying this new found relationship with my hair. My ends are in a better shape as I’ve done away with all the bone straight ends and only have texlaxed hair to deal with. I’d like to start texlaxing myself but it’s better I leave it to the hands of the hair stylist I can instruct. If there’s one thing I’ve learnt, keep it simple always.
My wash day routine now follows this pattern:
* Prepoo for 40 minutes with Trader’s Joe Virgin Coconut oil  (simply love the thick coconut gooey goodness). I’ve also incorporated the use of Trader’s Joe Virgin Coconut oil for cooking as well. It adds a nice flavour to vegetable stir fry when you’re making Tortilla wraps.
* Wash in sections (using hot water) with a sulfate free shampoo or clarifying shampoo depending on the product build up I’ve got.
* Apply Roux Porosity Control to my hair for 5 minutes before rinsing out.
* Apply green tea rinse before deep conditioning.
* Use a protein (Aubrey Organic GBP; Naturellegrow Intense Deep Conditioner ) or moisturising deep conditioner  (Hairveda Sitrinillah, Naturellegrow Marshmallow Root, Slippery Elm, Naturellegrow Mango & Coconut Water) alternating on a weekly basis.
* Rinse out the deep conditioner, wrap a cotton towel on my hair for 20minutes.
* Divide my hair into 4 sections, apply Chi Silk Infusion and proceed to blow dry on cool using the ‘Red by KISS Handless Dryer with the comb attachment’. It does a fantastic job of straightening my texlaxed hair including my roots.
* Apply Hollywood Beauty Mayonnaise Moisturizer to freshly blow dried hair.
* Whip out my paddle brush and proceed to brush each section 25 times (focusing on my scalp to stimulate growth).
Voila, I’m done within 3 hours.

Weekday Regimen:
During the week, it’s easier to maintain now by adopting the following routine:
* Pop 1 chewable microlozenge (5000 mcg biotin) daily. My nails have been sprouting like crazy. This is the last thing I take before going to bed as Stevie recommended cos when the body is at rest, it has the time to regenerate. I’ve gotten more than an inch since I commenced usage.

* Apply Hollywood Beauty Mayonnaise Moisturizer 3times weekly at night before going to bed. I simply divide my hair into 4 sections, apply the leave in and whip out my paddle brush. Proceed to give 25 brush strokes to each section focusing on my scalp (to stimulate growth). This leave in sinks in pretty fast and I don’t have to bother about staining my satin pillowcase.

I’m in a better place with my hair now I can see what’s working. I’ll be due for a monthly scalp check up with Stevie in about 3 weeks from now. Can’t wait to see and hear her reactions. I’ve been snapping pictures of my scalp, length and ends which I’ll be sharing with her.

Follow up Treatment@Hair Elite Salon

Today, I was scheduled for a second appointment with Stevid and ran late. Once I got there, we got started right away by washing my hair. The washing experience at this salon is extravagant as they usually take out time to massage your scalp thoroughly. Furthermore, they finger comb to detangle. No combs are used while your hair is wet.
My sister and I settled for the Mizani strengthening treatment to prevent breakage.

She had to undergo some scalp treatment which she had issues with. Since I didn’t have any of that, my hair was washed and deep conditioned with the Mizani strengthening treatment (protein treatment). The stylist proceeded to apply Chi Silk Infusion to my hair before blow drying.  These comb attachments are the truth as they straighten the heck out of your hair. Once we were done, she divided my hair into sections and sprayed it lightly with a holding mist before rolling it up.

I sat under the dryer for 30minutes and once my hair was dry, Stevie went ahead and finger combed it since I wanted lots of volume. She recommended I pin curl my hair in 8 sections at night when going to bed and simply finger comb once I take it down the following morning. My sister was shortly done as well and these are the results.

That’s a protective style she’s got on which she’ll keep for a week before taking it down. We settled down to talk before her next client came in and due to previous assessment she’d made earlier, new products were recommended. I’ve seen this product work on my sister’s hair so I’m really glad to try it out.

Basically what she’s recommended is to incorporate the 100 stroke brushing for my hair 3 times weekly, using the paddle brush below. The leave in conditioner she’s recommended does not require me to seal with oil as its a creamy lotion and quite rich. When it’s applied to my hair, it completely sinks in immediately and using the paddlebrush is easy, breezy. Hair remains moisturized for 5 straight days. What do you look out for when buying a paddle brush? You make sure it’s open like a comb and soft as that’ll prevent breakage and spit ends as well.

The brush is soft and opens up without snagging your hair. I’ll put up a demo next week using the leave in conditioners she recommended.

Hair Elite Salon Review

My go to resource for hair care while on vacation has always been ‘Yelp.com’. Depending on the city I’m traveling to, I always go online to search for salons specializing in healthy hair care and read up on client’s review as well. Yelp is a great resource for obtaining down to earth, honest reviews. While planning this trip, I had settled for 2 salons basically Hair Elite & ReviveSpa. I had booked an appointment with both salons informing them about my hair needs since I was planning on a relaxer touch up session.

ReviveSpa later communicated via email that the salon was closed for renovation. I had to go with Hair Elite. My sister had informed me about a lady in their church who had lush, healthy waist length hair. She had asked this lady where she got her hair done and the lady kept mentioning ‘Stevie’. Imagine my delight when we discovered that Stevie owned ‘Hair Elite’.
Yesterday, we finally set off for her salon after confirming our appointment. I had branched at one of this Spaniard grocery store to purchase ORS Relaxer kit.

IMG_2341.JPG

Stevie is the lady on the extreme right wearing the pink top and white bottoms. She was easy to talk to and listened attentively as we discussed my regimen. I told her I brought my relaxer since I observed she only uses Mizani products in her salon. She asked which relaxer I was using and I responded “ORS”. She stated I made the right choice for my fine strands and we were good to go. She spent close to 40mins applying a cream base to my scalp in tiny sections to prevent scalp burns. She did this repeatedly till she was satisfied my scalp and new growth was coated adequately. I was surprised to see that the relaxer was only applied to the 2.5inches of new growth I had.

Then she combed the new growth only once and we were off to rinse the relaxer out. After rinsing out the relaxer, she proceeded to apply a Mizani conditioner (can’t remember which one now) to the newly relaxed growth and we waited for 5minutes only before rinsing out. She explained that the conditioner will restore the moisture stripped by the relaxer.

She proceeded to use the neutralizing shampoo before deep conditioning. The blow drying experience was smooth and in no time my hair was straightened out. After examining my hair and discussing the products I was using, she made some changes and suggestions. Then I told her to cut my hair since we were trying out her own regimen for the next 30days (I’ll discuss this in my upcoming post). She cut it into a layered bob where the sides are much longer and the back is shorter. I called it the ‘C’ bob. Consultation and trimming is free for first time visitors and I only spent $45.00 for a 2hour session.

Reader’s Q & A

IMG_2332.JPG

Q: Should I use an activator when I Texlax?
A: Yes, you should. The reason why you’re texlaxing is a preference for under processed hair. To achieve results, it’s essential you divide your hair in tiny sections and coat each section with Jamaican Black Castor Oil & Vaseline. I often start with my ends then work my way towards my new growth as well, so I can get the kind of result I want. I’m usually heavy handed when applying the castor oil and Vaseline. Once you’ve coated your previously relaxed hair, over-processing won’t occur. Also ensure you apply Vaseline to your scalp.

Q: How should I apply peppermint oil to my scalp directly?
A: Applying essential oil directly to your scalp is a big no-no. Unless you’re ready to see your hair coming out in clumps, you’d better not go down this route. Essential oils are potent and moderation is the key when using it. If you’d prefer to use this oil as a potent growth aid, get an applicator bottle, pour in Jamaican Black Castor Oil / Jojoba Oil till it’s halfway. Pour in 4 caps of peppermint oil and shake the bottle. To ensure the oils blend together, keep the bottle in the darkest part of your wardrobe for a week.

I’ve been having my fill of hair porn, walking up to strangers and asking about their hair regimen. I recently learnt about the trimming regimen and I’ve booked an appointment on Wednesday with the creator of this regimen. I’m going in for a relaxer touch up, deep condition, blowdry, trim and style. It’s really insightful and I just hope Steveid allows me to record our discussions for your viewing pleasure.
Have a fun filled week ahead.

October 1 – The Movie Review

20140930-214756.jpg

Hello Ladies, how has the week been so far? Mine has been quite eventful. Over the weekend (Sunday to be precise), I attended the premiere of October 1 at Eko Hotel. The Urb and I had enough time to view all the movie props used in the movie. I fell in love with the green Mercedes Benz….it was such a cool vintage car.

20140930-224146.jpg
The event kicked off at 7.05p.m with Olisa Adibua as the M.C for the night.

20140930-215639.jpg
Back to the movie. It was simply fantastic in terms of the storyline and delivery by the protagonists. The movie was shot in Ilara Mokin, Ondo State and Lagos respectively. I can’t spill the beans but it’s gripping as the events unfold which finally led to a revelation of pre independence issues affecting a small community. If you’ve travelled along the South Western and Eastern parts of Nigeria, you’ll observe that Nigeria has got beautiful scenery especially within rural towns. One of my favorite past time is exploring rural villages, stopping to speak with the farmers and purchasing their produce. My favorite route used to be Gbongan – Oshogbo; Iwo – Ogbomosho and Ibadan – Abeokuta via Apata, Ibadan. It’s a fantastic experience for anyone who’s had the opportunity of touring this great country. Your perspective on a lot of things will change.

20140930-223214.jpg
October 1 is a dark psychological thriller film written by Tunde Babalola, produced and directed by Kunle Afolayan. It stars Sadiq Daba, Kehinde Bankole, Bimbo Manuel, Kanayo O. Kanayo, Fabian Adeoye Lojede, DavidBailie, Nick Rhys, and introducing Demola Adedoyin and Deola Sagoe. The film narrates the story of Danladi Waziri (Sadiq Daba), a police officer from Northern Nigeria who is posted to a remote town of Akote in Western Nigeria to investigate the frequent female murder cases in the community and have the mystery solved before the Nigerian flag is raised on October 1, Nigeria’s Independence Day.

20140930-223923.jpg
Just like ‘The Figurine’, this movie is a piece of art and Kunle Afolayan has raised the bar once more. My star character in the movie was ‘Afonja’ as he made us laugh with his facial expressions without really saying a lot. Learnt it’s showing at most cinema outlets within the country tomorrow. Kindly take out time to see it.

Happy Independence Day Nigeria!!!
