What’s Relative on your hair journey?

There are several reasons for starting out a hair journey and the culprits have ranged from thinning, breakage, alopecia, stagnation in hair growth, split ends, mid shaft splits or breakage, single strand knots and the list is endless. What spurred me on a healthy hair journey was thicker hair and overtime, that goal hasn’t changed. Sure there are other benefits such as length retention and the longer hair lengths, but the underlying goal has always been thicker hair.

As the months rolled in, thicker hair has been achieved relative to the fine, thin strands I commenced with. Often times, I have wished for thicker, voluminous hair like I see online but I have come to realize it’s a gradual journey. The most important thing is to stick with a regimen that works for your hair type or strands.

The most important thing you can do for your hair in 2015 is to embrace change and see which directions it takes your hair. Remember keep it simple always.

New Year, New Goals

Happy New Year and it’s great to be back on this platform after a long break. During the Christmas and new year break, I took out time to assess the health of my hair and also decide on the hair goals I want to achieve this year. By the way, I love this cold, dry weather and I’ve been keeping my hair protected by investing in some quality silk head scarves I can wear when going out. Of late, I’ve been wearing my hair out a lot since I commenced on this new regimen.

Basically, my hair goals for 2015 are:

* Maintain and sustain my new hair regimen.

* Keep up with a daily dosage of Biotin chewable vitamin (gotta say the growth has been amazing and it also keeps the weight off).

* 100 strokes three times weekly with my paddle brush.

* Touch up every 16 weeks.

* Eyelash trimming every 4 weeks.

* Blowdry on cool once weekly with my KISS Hand-less Dryer.

* Keep up with monthly scalp scrubs.

In terms of length, my full year goal is to achieve bra-strap length. I intend to keep things simple and easy going forward based on the results I’ve been seeing.

I wish you all an amazing year ahead.

Year End Verdict

Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of attending to my niece’s hair. Both of them had been hounding me to wash and deep condition since my sister had been too busy. I commenced with the younger one by detangling and once we were done, I was amazed at the results we had gotten for the past 4years since we started taking care of her hair.
See pics below:

Suffice to say, we spent 2hours ogling and taking pictures of this huge Afro.

She’s excited about her length now and wants to wear it out. Prepoo was done with Aubrey Organics GBP for an hour. Nowadays, it’s important her hair is braided in 10sections to make it easier to wash. Applied green tea rinse, allowed it to dry and applied Silk Dreams Shea What to each section; covered her hair with a shower cap and left it on for 2hours before rinsing out. Wrapped her hair with a cotton towel for 20minutes before sealing in sections with Giovanni Weightless Leave in & Trader Joe’s Jojoba oil.
She’s at mid-length now and the thickness and length is simply amazing.

Wash Day Chronicle

Apart from Lauren Mechelle whose hair I absolutely adore, I’ve got a hair crush on Kimberly Holden as well. She makes these fun quirky and engaging videos. If you’re thinking of trying on clip in extensions for the holidays, you should also know how to wash them as well. If you’re in the mood for a messy bun tutorial, check the videos below:

Reader’s Q&A

Q: Jamaican Black Castor Oil matts my hair. How do I prevent this going forward.
A: Let me start by saying that Jbco is quite thick. I’d assume you’re using it to seal your ends. Unless you’ve got thick hair strands, it might be okay to use. The key to prevent matting when using this oil is to use it sparingly (pea sized amounts as a little goes a long way). One other option is to use it as a growth aid for your scalp only while you can seal with coconut oil; grapeseed oil, avocado oil or any other natural oil.
Using Jbco to seal for ladies with fine hair, results in matting and it weighs your down giving your ends that stringy , weak look.

Q: How do I prevent breakage during harmattan?
A: There are two options you can consider:
– Protective styling such as braids, wigs and weaves. It’s important you do not leave these styles beyond 4weeks max. If you’re going the wig route, make sure you’ve got corn rows installed underneath. You can wash and deep condition your hair on a weekly basis (assuming you’re opting for wigs). Maintaining your hair during this period is key.
– Second option for ladies who’d like to carry their own hair for the festivities is to incorporate weekly hot oil treatment as your prepoo (keeps your hair lubricated and in top shape, preventing dryness which often leads to breakage. Also make use of heat during deep conditioning sessions on a weekly basis. This you can do with a heat cap or steamer as it ramps up moisture for your hair strands.
These are some of the things I do once Harmattan arrives.

Have a great week ahead!!!

Update: NAHCO finally called off its recent strike. For Ladies who wanted to place an order for the following products, you can now do so.

Trimming your Ends – How to?

It’s important to have a schedule you can stick to when trimming your ends. If you’re just starting out on your hair journey and your ends are in a weak state, start afresh by sniping those dead ends off. Your hair will thank you for it.

If you decide not to, months later down the road, you’ll have to face this monster head on. At that point in time, you’ll be battling with split ends, breakage and mid-shaft splits as well. It’s important you nip this early on by doing the needful. As time goes on, you’ll reap the rewards in terms of healthy, thicker ends.

What schedule should I implement for my hair?

You can either have a 6week or 4week calendar you adhere to for trimming.

Hair Regimen Update

I’ll be introducing you to ‘Red Handle-Less 1875W Ceramic Tourmaline’, recommended for Pik Hair Straightening & Drying. As part of ongoing effort to change my hair regimen, Stevie had recommended this particular dryer for my hair needs. I had earlier told her about my desire to cut down on the number of hours I spent on wash days and how I felt air drying was making my ends more image imagebrittle than I liked.

According to her, long drying times can cause undetected damage to hair. Air dried hair sustains more damage to the Cell Membrane Complex, the sandwich-layer of proteins, lipids and covalently bonded fatty acids that is the glue that binds cuticles together. Once the CMC is damaged, cuticles can become dislodged easily which leads to rough damaged hair which may eventually split or break. She stressed the importance of blow drying on cool or low heat and how it was vital I did not abuse the process.

Upon receipt of the Kiss Handless Dryer, I was struck by 2 things:

– it was lightweight

– it has 3 settings: cool, low & high

– the box contained 2 Pik sets

– it also had a concentrator as well

– it’s cool to touch allowing you to manoveur easily.

– you’ll get salon like results at home…so convenient.

Unlike other blow dryers, this brand didn’t have the protruding handle making it easy to swing across your hair easily. It’s quite easy to manoveur and I spent 5 minutes drying and straightening my hair. The tension method has never been this easy.

How do I use it?

I divide freshly deep conditioned hair into 8 sections making sure to apply Chi Silk Infusion. Then I switch over to cool or low heat depending on how straight I want my hair to be. One single pass and voila!my hair is all straightened out as if I just flat ironed it. It’s made it easier to implement eyelash trimming for my ends. You can use this for natural hair as well on days you want to conduct a length check and trim your ends.

Hair Regimen Changes

The interesting thing about a personal hair journey, is the ability to learn and try new practices. When I met with Stevid to discuss changes to my hair regimen, I’ll always remember what she said. “Honey, you gotta learn to treat your relaxed hair in its current state”. Basically, she meant using appropriate products and techniques for my hair type.
I’ve got fine strands and one major element I’ve had to contend with is finding the right leave in conditioner that won’t weigh my hair down irrespective of the frequency at which I use it during the week. I’ve used GiovaƱni Weightless, Elasta QP, Advanced Biolage Matrix successfully by using pea sized amounts while following up with a natural oil to seal. However, it can be tiring after a hard day at work mustering up the energy to do this on a daily basis.
I wanted a fuss free regimen that won’t require more than 2-3 hours max on wash days and 5 minutes maintenance schedule during the week. Basis my explanation, she drew up a new regimen for me. I’ve had the opportunity to implement for the past 6weeks and it’s been liberating.
What changes were recommended?
* Trim my ends monthly.
* Reduce my relaxer stretch from 6 months to 4 months.
* Use a paddle brush 3 times weekly to stimulate my scalp.
* Incorporate the use of a hair supplement.
*Incorporate blow drying on cool once weekly.
*Stop sealing with a natural oil & incorporate the use of a creamy leave in.
At the end of 90 days, I’ll send in pictures of my scalp, ends and hair length. She’ll analyse and we’ll meet on Skype to discuss my progress. I shared my lazy attitude with popping hair pills and she recommended I try this hair vitamin out.

image

image

I only need to take 1 microlozenge daily and it’s got this natural strawberry flavour. It’s like popping Vitamin C….
Makes my life easier. So far, I’ve been good with this one.
She recommended I start indulging in 100 brush strokes, 3 times weekly before going to bed as it stimulates the scalp for growth and prevents split ends. The key to successful brushing is to ensure that your bristle is soft, widely spaced and you’re using a creamy leave in. You also need to brush in small sections…

image

This was the brush she recommended I got for my hair type. The biggest change was when we had to decide on the type of leave in conditioner to use going forward. She requested I bring with me, previous samples of leave in conditioners I’ve used over the course of one year. I went with Elasta QP, GiovaƱni Weightless, Advanced Biolage Matrix.
Once I got to her salon, we went into demo mode. She took a swipe of each leave in and applied it to her inner wrist. She proceeded to rub lightly and would ask me what I observed. I noticed that the leave in just sat there and it wasn’t absorbed. She went ahead and applied same to small sections of my freshly blow dried hair, it was the same reaction we got. She stopped at this point and informed me that once my leave in was not creamy & oily, then it’s not good enough for my strands. From her explanation, it was clear that the products just sat on my hair and it wasn’t absorbed. Partial absorption actually occurred when we sealed with a natural oil. The oil aided further penetration.
At this point, she brought out what she felt was more appropriate for my hair type.

image

image

The first bottle is ideally suited for ladies with thicker hair strands while the 2nd bottle is for ladies with fine strands like myself. The tag line on the 2nd bottle states “for ends that bend not break”. This product does exactly just that. I’ve had the pure pleasure of using it for the past 6weeks and wearing my hair out daily has been a pure joy. Talk about ends that bend….that’s what I got and those days where my ends got snagged on my clothes are now over.

image

image

Upon application, my hair was lapping it up as I could see it was completely absorbed. My hair was left with a shine and sheen that was unbelievable. After application was complete, she divided my hair into smaller sections and began to brush starting from my ends while working her way up to the roots. No snagging, ripping or tangles…It was easy breezy. The beauty about this product…your hair is not weighed down. It allows your hair to move in its natural state. My hair remained soft and fluffy all through the week and my ends….In tip top shape. Both bottles will be available on our website next week. You can place a pre order now.

Fab Find for Christmas

For sometime now, I’ve been in search of a makeup kit that I can store in one place rather than searching haphazardly for my eyeshadow, lip gloss or lipstick each morning while going to work. It used to be tedious searching YouTube for the perfect makeup tutorial that’ll make my face pop without unnecessary drama.
My wish list for Xmas this year was a collection of palette that would suit my  purpose. I searched high and low and wasn’t satisfied with the ones I’d seen till I stumbled across this brand. I got the Stila Artist Essentials Set as an early Xmas gift from my mom and it’s set the tone for 2015.

image

image

image

What do I like about this set? Several things. It comes in a sleek, earthy box with a clasp in front which keeps the content together. It’s lightweight and  compact size, makes it easier to travel with. I don’t have to worry about makeup spilling on my clothes or having to store it in a Ziploc bag. The clasp was well thought out.
This box contains the following items :
– 4 different sets of palette ranging from pop art, renaissance, abstract and surreal.
– #9 all over blend brush for applying and smudging your eyeliner or eyeshadow.
– smudge stick waterproof eyeliner in stingray.
– a convertible color dual lip & cheek cream.
– stay all day liquid lipstick in patina

image

image

I forgot to mention it’s got an instruction sheet on how to blend the different palette to achieve whatever look you may be going for.

image

image

Each palette type is represented on the instruction sheet making it easy to interprete.

My first impressions? I love, love this makeup brand and I’m sold. I started by checking out the instruction sheet to see which of the looks I wanted to interprete. I settled for ‘pop art’ and went to work with my brush. I was done within 5 minutes. That’s a first as I usually spend a lot of time wiping off and doing up a new set once I’m not satisfied with my look. With the manual it was easy at a go. I applied the eyeliner and used the blend brush to smudge the lined eyes for a smoky effect.
For my lips, I decided to go with the ‘all day liquid lipstick in patina’. I must warn that a little goes a long way. I ate, drank loads of water and this lipstick stayed put throughout the day. I was pleasantly surprised to see that my entire makeup stayed put throughout the day. The eyeshadow stayed true to form all day.

I haven’t used the lip/cheek cream but based on the experience I’ve had so far, I do not expect anything less. This is definitely a keeper for me.
For ladies who made specific requests for this brand, your package will be delivered tomorrow and I hope you enjoy creating different looks like I’ve done.
I’ll be back tomorrow with another fab find.

Update on M’s Texlax

20140926-073706.jpg

If you’ve read previous post on M’s Texlax update, then you might have been wondering about her progress recently. She sent me this recent update on her progress early this month and I still remember how she squealed “I made arm pit length”. Congrats to M and consistency is the name of the game ladies.

Have a fabulous weekend!
