New Year, New Goals

Happy New Year and it’s great to be back on this platform after a long break. During the Christmas and new year break, I took out time to assess the health of my hair and also decide on the hair goals I want to achieve this year. By the way, I love this cold, dry weather and I’ve been keeping my hair protected by investing in some quality silk head scarves I can wear when going out. Of late, I’ve been wearing my hair out a lot since I commenced on this new regimen.

Basically, my hair goals for 2015 are:

* Maintain and sustain my new hair regimen.

* Keep up with a daily dosage of Biotin chewable vitamin (gotta say the growth has been amazing and it also keeps the weight off).

* 100 strokes three times weekly with my paddle brush.

* Touch up every 16 weeks.

* Eyelash trimming every 4 weeks.

* Blowdry on cool once weekly with my KISS Hand-less Dryer.

* Keep up with monthly scalp scrubs.

In terms of length, my full year goal is to achieve bra-strap length. I intend to keep things simple and easy going forward based on the results I’ve been seeing.

I wish you all an amazing year ahead.

Year End Verdict

Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of attending to my niece’s hair. Both of them had been hounding me to wash and deep condition since my sister had been too busy. I commenced with the younger one by detangling and once we were done, I was amazed at the results we had gotten for the past 4years since we started taking care of her hair.
See pics below:

Suffice to say, we spent 2hours ogling and taking pictures of this huge Afro.

She’s excited about her length now and wants to wear it out. Prepoo was done with Aubrey Organics GBP for an hour. Nowadays, it’s important her hair is braided in 10sections to make it easier to wash. Applied green tea rinse, allowed it to dry and applied Silk Dreams Shea What to each section; covered her hair with a shower cap and left it on for 2hours before rinsing out. Wrapped her hair with a cotton towel for 20minutes before sealing in sections with Giovanni Weightless Leave in & Trader Joe’s Jojoba oil.
She’s at mid-length now and the thickness and length is simply amazing.

Reader’s Q&A

Q: Jamaican Black Castor Oil matts my hair. How do I prevent this going forward.
A: Let me start by saying that Jbco is quite thick. I’d assume you’re using it to seal your ends. Unless you’ve got thick hair strands, it might be okay to use. The key to prevent matting when using this oil is to use it sparingly (pea sized amounts as a little goes a long way). One other option is to use it as a growth aid for your scalp only while you can seal with coconut oil; grapeseed oil, avocado oil or any other natural oil.
Using Jbco to seal for ladies with fine hair, results in matting and it weighs your down giving your ends that stringy , weak look.

Q: How do I prevent breakage during harmattan?
A: There are two options you can consider:
– Protective styling such as braids, wigs and weaves. It’s important you do not leave these styles beyond 4weeks max. If you’re going the wig route, make sure you’ve got corn rows installed underneath. You can wash and deep condition your hair on a weekly basis (assuming you’re opting for wigs). Maintaining your hair during this period is key.
– Second option for ladies who’d like to carry their own hair for the festivities is to incorporate weekly hot oil treatment as your prepoo (keeps your hair lubricated and in top shape, preventing dryness which often leads to breakage. Also make use of heat during deep conditioning sessions on a weekly basis. This you can do with a heat cap or steamer as it ramps up moisture for your hair strands.
These are some of the things I do once Harmattan arrives.

Have a great week ahead!!!

Update: NAHCO finally called off its recent strike. For Ladies who wanted to place an order for the following products, you can now do so.

Recent Wash Day

Wash days recently have become shorter. I’ve had to do away with methods like:
* Deep conditioning overnight
* Prepoo overnight
Less is simply more and I’m enjoying this new found relationship with my hair. My ends are in a better shape as I’ve done away with all the bone straight ends and only have texlaxed hair to deal with. I’d like to start texlaxing myself but it’s better I leave it to the hands of the hair stylist I can instruct. If there’s one thing I’ve learnt, keep it simple always.
My wash day routine now follows this pattern:
* Prepoo for 40 minutes with Trader’s Joe Virgin Coconut oil  (simply love the thick coconut gooey goodness). I’ve also incorporated the use of Trader’s Joe Virgin Coconut oil for cooking as well. It adds a nice flavour to vegetable stir fry when you’re making Tortilla wraps.
* Wash in sections (using hot water) with a sulfate free shampoo or clarifying shampoo depending on the product build up I’ve got.
* Apply Roux Porosity Control to my hair for 5 minutes before rinsing out.
* Apply green tea rinse before deep conditioning.
* Use a protein (Aubrey Organic GBP; Naturellegrow Intense Deep Conditioner ) or moisturising deep conditioner  (Hairveda Sitrinillah, Naturellegrow Marshmallow Root, Slippery Elm, Naturellegrow Mango & Coconut Water) alternating on a weekly basis.
* Rinse out the deep conditioner, wrap a cotton towel on my hair for 20minutes.
* Divide my hair into 4 sections, apply Chi Silk Infusion and proceed to blow dry on cool using the ‘Red by KISS Handless Dryer with the comb attachment’. It does a fantastic job of straightening my texlaxed hair including my roots.
* Apply Hollywood Beauty Mayonnaise Moisturizer to freshly blow dried hair.
* Whip out my paddle brush and proceed to brush each section 25 times (focusing on my scalp to stimulate growth).
Voila, I’m done within 3 hours.

Weekday Regimen:
During the week, it’s easier to maintain now by adopting the following routine:
* Pop 1 chewable microlozenge (5000 mcg biotin) daily. My nails have been sprouting like crazy. This is the last thing I take before going to bed as Stevie recommended cos when the body is at rest, it has the time to regenerate. I’ve gotten more than an inch since I commenced usage.

* Apply Hollywood Beauty Mayonnaise Moisturizer 3times weekly at night before going to bed. I simply divide my hair into 4 sections, apply the leave in and whip out my paddle brush. Proceed to give 25 brush strokes to each section focusing on my scalp (to stimulate growth). This leave in sinks in pretty fast and I don’t have to bother about staining my satin pillowcase.

I’m in a better place with my hair now I can see what’s working. I’ll be due for a monthly scalp check up with Stevie in about 3 weeks from now. Can’t wait to see and hear her reactions. I’ve been snapping pictures of my scalp, length and ends which I’ll be sharing with her.

If you’ve read previous post on M’s Texlax update, then you might have been wondering about her progress recently. She sent me this recent update on her progress early this month and I still remember how she squealed “I made arm pit length”. Congrats to M and consistency is the name of the game ladies.

Have a fabulous weekend!

Readers’ Q&A

Hello Everyone. How was the weekend? Mine was busy with lots of traveling thrown in between and it’s great to be back. So it’s time to answer your emails.

20140825-195457.jpg

Q: What has made the difference since you commenced your hair journey?
A: The biggest difference has been regular deep conditioning. Without deep conditioning, it would have been impossible to retain length and achieve thicker hair. Nowadays, I abide by the principle of ‘less is more’. The only thing I add to my deep conditioning staple is a cap of Roux Porosity Control. Adhering to a consistent hair regimen has aided growth as well.

Q: When should I apply my tea rinse?
A: Your tea rinse must be applied after washing your hair prior to deep conditioning. The essence of using a tea rinse is to minimize the incidence of shedding.

Q: How long will it take me to grow my hair from BSL to MBL?
A: if you’ve achieved bra strap length already, you’ve done a darn good job. Timelines for hitting particular length goals are different for each individual based on your monthly growth rate. The most important thing is to stick to what has brought you this far and hopefully, you’ll reach mid back length soon. Just do it at a pace you’re comfortable with and take care of your ends.

Have a great week ahead.

First Impressions: Naturellegrow Intense Deep Conditioner

20140819-141800.jpg

Over the weekend I loosened my braids. I’ve been itching to try out the Naturellegrow deep conditioner range as I wanted to have another staple moisturizing deep conditioner besides Hairveda Sitrinillah. This deep conditioner range is available in 16oz jars and its filled to the brim. It’s a lot thicker than Hairveda Sitrinillah and a little goes a long way. From the ingredients listed, you’ve got a mix of herbal extracts such as Marshmallow roots, Lavender, Rosemary, Peppermint water e.t.c.

I had gone to the salon I use regularly for relaxer touch up sessions to wash my hair and it’s always a pleasure when stylists listen to instructions. Once I was done washing, I applied the tea rinse and waited for the rinse to dry out before applying the ‘Intense Deep Conditioner’. I applied in sections and upon application, I could feel my scalp tingle which must be due to the peppermint infusion. I covered my hair with a shower cap and sat under my heat cap for 45 minutes. Once time was up, I waited for an extra 15minutes to allow the heat cool down before rinsing out.

The results were fantastic. My hair was soft, fluffy and moisturized. The guy who handles my hair regularly kept taking second glances at the deep conditioner asking if these are the products I’m using regularly as my hair is thriving. Detangling was a breeze and I rollerset using my staple combs from Hercules Sagemann. What products did I use for rollersetting? Oh it was a mix of lotta body and Chi Silk Infusion which was my leave in for the day. It was fantastic and the combo resulted in sleek, bouncy curls.

Today is Tuesday and my hair is still soft and fluffy. Naturellegrow is a keeper.

Readers’ Q&A

20140815-222607.jpg

Ladies! How’re you all? Trust everyone is doing great. I’ve been busy for the past couple of weeks on some other matters. I also needed a break to rest as this is summer and we all need some time away on vacation. To ladies who’ve been asking if the Hairveda product samples have arrived. No we are yet to receive and you’ll be the first to know once it arrives.

So back to the question for today..

Q: Why can’t I use essential oils alone on my scalp and hair?

A: One thing that you must remember about essential oils is not to use them undiluted! They are usually very strong and, if overused, can cause serious skin burns as well as other health issues (such as high blood pressure, headaches and so on). People with high blood pressure should avoid using rosemary oil.

Now, for hundreds of years people have been using EOs to treat hair loss. Most people either mix 1-3 drops of their favorite EO into shampoo/conditioner or add some to their pre-shampoo oil treatments.

Another thing about EOs that seems to come up time and time again is that they work best when used in conjunction with other oils. Moderation is key when using essential oils. You must take care.

Easy, Breezy

I have decided to switch things up by investing in Satin Pillowcases. There are days I simply can’t locate my satin bonnets and I’m so done with searching. This pair of satin pillowcases comes in various colors and practically keep my protective styles intact. I got 2pcs for N2,800 and it’s proven useful nowadays.

20140807-164230.jpg

I’ve had fun using this comb attachment to blow dry my hair. The longest parts of wash day is waiting for your hair to air dry. Now, I really don’t have to wait that long, I simply use this comb with my dryer adjusting the setting to ‘cool shot’. To get that sleek look, I divide my hair into small sections applying Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum OR Chi Silk Infusion resulting in easy, breezy hair.
