To Airdry or Not

I’m at the stage where air-drying no longer works for my Texlaxed hair. My weekly wash day isn’t complete without blowdrying on cool once my hair is almost dry. On the few occasions I’ve tried air drying, I often end up with shrinkage and crinkly hair. I guess it’s due to this fine strands of mine. Your experience may be different. The most important thing is to do what’s right for your hair.

I’ve worked very hard to get this beautiful mane and I like to wear my hair out or in a messy updo while striving to project a professional image too. Messy updo’s have become my go to hairstyle due to the thickness I’ve gained now. It’s so gratifying to pull up my hair into a messy bun without using ponytail holders but bobby pins only.

New Year, New Goals

Happy New Year and it’s great to be back on this platform after a long break. During the Christmas and new year break, I took out time to assess the health of my hair and also decide on the hair goals I want to achieve this year. By the way, I love this cold, dry weather and I’ve been keeping my hair protected by investing in some quality silk head scarves I can wear when going out. Of late, I’ve been wearing my hair out a lot since I commenced on this new regimen.

Basically, my hair goals for 2015 are:

* Maintain and sustain my new hair regimen.

* Keep up with a daily dosage of Biotin chewable vitamin (gotta say the growth has been amazing and it also keeps the weight off).

* 100 strokes three times weekly with my paddle brush.

* Touch up every 16 weeks.

* Eyelash trimming every 4 weeks.

* Blowdry on cool once weekly with my KISS Hand-less Dryer.

* Keep up with monthly scalp scrubs.

In terms of length, my full year goal is to achieve bra-strap length. I intend to keep things simple and easy going forward based on the results I’ve been seeing.

I wish you all an amazing year ahead.

Trimming your Ends – How to?

It’s important to have a schedule you can stick to when trimming your ends. If you’re just starting out on your hair journey and your ends are in a weak state, start afresh by sniping those dead ends off. Your hair will thank you for it.

If you decide not to, months later down the road, you’ll have to face this monster head on. At that point in time, you’ll be battling with split ends, breakage and mid-shaft splits as well. It’s important you nip this early on by doing the needful. As time goes on, you’ll reap the rewards in terms of healthy, thicker ends.

What schedule should I implement for my hair?

You can either have a 6week or 4week calendar you adhere to for trimming.

How do I take care of my wig?

If you’re on a long stretch and currently wigging as a form of protective style, then you need to know how to care for and maintain your wigs. To achieve a natural appearance and unique colour variations, all human hair wigs are chemically processed. To give your wig the longest shelf life, it is very important to use sulfate-free hair care products that are specifically made for chemically processed hair. To wash your wig, follow these steps:

1. Detangle the wig using a wig brush. Start at the ends and work upwards to the base of the cap.

2. Rinse the wig in cold water, with the water flowing in the same direction of the hair to avoid tangling. Do not soak your wig in a basin. This will cause the hair to tangle and mat together.

3. Using your fingertips and sulfate free shampoo, distribute the shampoo evenly throughout the hair.

4. Rinse with cold water to remove shampoo. Rinse so that the water is flowing in the same direction as the hair.

5. Remove excess water by gently patting with a cotton towel. Do not wring or squeeze.

6. Condition the wig with a quality conditioner, using your fingertips to distribute the conditioner evenly throughout the hair.

7. Remove the conditioner by rinsing with cold water. To remove excess water, pat gently with a soft towel. Do not squeeze or wring. Allow the wig to air dry on a tall can of hairspray (if you don’t have a wig stand).

Caring for Synthetic Wigs:

1. Gently brush the wig thoroughly with a brush.

2. Add one tablespoon of shampoo to a sink filled with cold water.

3. Immerse wig for one minute and agitate gently. Do not rub.

4. Rinse the wig gently in cold clear water twice until thoroughly rinsed.

5. Blot the wig gently with a towel. Do not squeeze or wring.

6. Apply conditioning spray very lightly over wig, spraying 10-12inches from the wig.

7. Allow the wig to air dry on a slender object like a can of hairspray or a shampoo bottle covered with a hand towel.

8. Do not use a hair dryer. Air dry only. You may gently style the wig with your fingertips.

9. Brush wig only when completely dry. Do not allow the wig to dry in direct sunlight.

1. Divided my hair into 4 sections and carefully detangled with my Hercules Sagemann Rake Comb.
2. Prepoo’d with Njoy Prepoo & Moisture seal oil. Went under my heat cap for an hour.
3. Washed my hair in sections with Suave Daily Clarifying Shampoo. Left the shampoo on for about a minute to ensure the sulfate ingredients strip all product build up residue. Rinsed in sections and applied my Ion Smoothing conditioner which I left for about 2minutes before rinsing.
4. Wrapped a cotton towel around my hair for 30minutes to absorb the wetness. Thereafter, I carefully detangled each section and sprayed my hair liberally with green tea (I used 4tea bags today…why? Just wanted to) while making sure I massaged my scalp.
5. I was going to use Silk Dreams Vanilla Moisture but while going through my product sash, I discovered I still had a huge jar of Vitale Hair Mayonnaise & ORS Replenishing Conditioner. So I’ve decided to exhaust this stash before moving onto other products.
6. In an empty jar, I mixed Vitale Hair Mayonnaise, Roux Porosity Control, ORS Replenishing, 3drops of pure peppermint oil & castor oil. Mixed together with my sprush and applied to each section. Covered my hair with a shower cap and went under my heat cap for an hour.

7. Once my time was up, I removed the heat cap and left my hair to cool for another 15minutes before rinsing out. Wrapped my hair with a cotton towel for 30minutes.
8. Sealed with Jojoba oil & Biolage Advanced Matrix leave-in. Ended up with soft fluffy hair.
9. Braided my hair into one big chunk since I’ll be wigging throughout the week as I’ve gotten more growth with the use of Njoy Sulfur Growth oil.

Wash Day Diary

1. Commenced by dividing my hair into 4sections and detangled with the Hercules Sageman Rake Comb.
2. Prepoo with NJoy Prepoo & Seal Moisture oil as depicted in the picture above. This oil is jam packed with all kinds of essential oil and the tingles I experienced was awesome. It was like being under my heating cap or steamer.
3. Covered my hair with 2 shower caps and left it on for 5 hours. I wasn’t faithful with my regimen during my long vacation. So I thought to myself, this will be a nice way to get back on track.
4. Washed my hair with my staple – Ion Keratin Smoothing Shampoo (I’m clarifying next week) to start off September on a fresh note.
5. In a small bowl, I mixed Aubrey Protein balancing conditioner, Roux Porosity, a drop of pure unrefined jojoba oil (Dr Adorable Inc. has got fantastic range of essential oils) and 3 drops of peppermint oil and mixed together. Sectioned my hair into four and proceeded to apply.
6. Covered my hair with 2 shower caps and left it on overnight.
7. Rinsed it out this morning and wrapped my hair with a cotton towel. Left it on for 30minutes.
8. Applied my leave-in which is ‘Biolage Matrix Advanced Fibre strong(this product is full of ceramides which fortifies the hair strands). I bought this at the TGF Salon within Walmart when I went for a deep conditioning and straightening session. It was used on my hair and I loved how it made my hair silky.
9. Sealed my hair with jojoba oil and applied Njoy Sulfur growth oil to my scalp.

Client Update

Ladies, nothing is more inspiring than receiving great news that motivates you along on this hair journey. We’re all in this together and it’s great to encourage ourselves every time irrespective of what has been achieved.

I got a mail from one of our readers on this blog. Remember I told you about F & I deciding to use NJoy Sulfur growth oil from now on. Well this is her current update and I still can’t get over how lush and thick her hair is right now. She’s grown her hair beyond arm pit and her journey has been amazing and a wild ride as well (she knows what I’m talking about). Consistency and sticking to a hair regimen pays off. To quote her directly “I’m more than excited as everyone has been raving about my hair”.
